The Difference Between A Lug and Wafer Butterfly Valve

The Difference Between A Lug and Wafer Butterfly Valve

2019-02-12 16:59:28

Butterfly valves have been around for a long time, and are used for a variety of applications. They made their first appearance during the 1930s, and have been utilized by several industries ever since. Often made out of cast iron, butterfly valve's name is based from the functionality of its disc.

The wafer butterfly valve is one of the most common types of valves in industrial pipelines. The structure of wafer butterfly valve itself is relatively small. It is only necessary to put the butterfly valve in the middle of the flange at both ends of the pipe, and use the stud bolt to pass through the pipe flange and the pair.

  • Pressure Ratings: PN10, PN16
  • Connections: Flange
  • Temperature: ≤ 80°C
  • Materials: Ductile iron
  • Medium: Water
  • Face to Face: BS5153, DIN3202 F6
  • Flange Standard: EN1092-2, ASME B16.5
  • Applications: Water Supply Systems (Distribution, Treatment etc.), Irrigation, Heating Systems, Ship Building, Industrial Processes (Liquids and Gases)
  • Product Details

RKSfluid Swing Check Valves are designed to prevent reverse flow in water supply and distribution pipelines. Featuring a ductile iron body and flanged connections, the valves are available in sizes DN50–DN1600 with pressure ratings PN10 and PN16.

The swing-disc design allows forward flow to open the valve and uses reverse-flow pressure to return the disc toward its seat. Face-to-face dimensions are available to BS 5153 and DIN 3202 F6 requirements. These valves are suitable for water supply, water treatment, irrigation and other compatible water-handling systems operating at temperatures up to 80°C.

Key Features

  • Automatic Reverse-Flow Prevention: The swing-disc mechanism responds to flow direction without requiring manual operation.
  • Ductile Iron Construction: Designed for water pipeline service.
  • Large-Diameter Range: Available from DN50 to DN1600 for a wide range of pipeline sizes.
  • PN10 and PN16 Options: Pressure ratings for different water distribution requirements.
  • Standardized Face-to-Face Dimensions: BS 5153 and DIN 3202 F6 options for dimensional planning.
  • Flanged Connections: Supports integration into flanged pipeline systems.

FAQs

The disc opens under forward-flow pressure and swings toward the seat as flow decreases or reverses. Closing behavior depends on disc design, flow velocity and system operating conditions.
Swing check valves are commonly installed in horizontal pipelines and may also be installed in vertical pipelines with upward flow when the design permits. Installation orientation and flow direction should follow the manufacturer's instructions.
A swing check valve prevents reverse flow, but it does not eliminate water hammer. The pressure surge depends on flow velocity, pump shutdown behavior, pipeline characteristics and valve closing dynamics.
They are different dimensional references. The required face-to-face length should match the specified valve standard or existing pipeline layout, particularly when replacing a valve in an operating system.
Select the pressure rating based on the pipeline design pressure and applicable engineering requirements, including relevant operating transients. The rating must be suitable for the system's actual pressure conditions.
Check nominal size, pressure rating, face-to-face length, flange drilling, flow direction, installation orientation and available clearance. These factors determine whether the replacement fits the existing pipeline and operates correctly.
It can be used on pump discharge lines to prevent reverse flow when the pump stops. Valve closing behavior, reverse-flow conditions and potential water hammer should be evaluated as part of the system design.
Specify valve size, pressure rating, quantity, flange standard, face-to-face requirement, installation orientation, operating conditions and any project-specific inspection or documentation requirements.
